THE BRIEF
After a couple of years of research and negotiations, enterprising brothers Andrew and Gavin Smith were able to acquire a prime site opposite Saltburn Pier for their new minigolf venture and turned to us at UrbanCrazy to design and build it. Our clients wanted to the course to be “premium” and “iconic” and to include fun seaside theming relevant to the surroundings.
Plans
We devised a course layout to make best use of the relatively small space, with a hole-to-hole difficulty level that would entertain all ages and ensure a steady flow of customers. For the theming it was important that we created one-off, exclusive features and not supply anything ‘off-the-shelf’. Our drawings were client-approved and Planning Consent was finally granted in November 2015.
Our work
The site location and ground conditions presented more than a few challenges to our construction team and so greater consideration was paid to drainage provision and to the durability of construction materials. We installed our exclusive bona fide kerbing and felt and included undulations, ramps and so on to vary the game play. Shingle, hardy planting and rocks completed the landscaping.
The results
With course features that include a beach hut you must play through, a lighthouse dressed in a traditional golf jumper and “The Bridge Over The River Tees” we’d have to say this is one of the most unique courses in the country. Check out the photos in the gallery, right. It was a proud day when we handed the site back 3 weeks ahead of schedule.
And finally…
Former England international footballer, Jonathan Woodgate, tried out the course on Monday 21 March. Ever the competitor, he went round in a record-equalling 21 shots. Can you match or beat that?
