CRAZY GOLF: Prospect Park Crazy Golf, Reading

Reading landmarks themed crazy golf course an instant hit!

THE BRIEF

Reading Borough Council asked us to build an outdoor family adventure 9-hole crazy golf for one of their flagship parks, Prospect Park. Each hole needed to have its own unique Reading theme, and be accessible for a broad range of abilities including wheelchair access.

Plans

Although the area available to build the course was quite a small space, we set about finding the best way to utilise the area to the maximum to create an exciting and vibrant 9-hole crazy golf course. Our designs incorporated key Reading landmarks such as: Reading Abbey; The Blade Building; The Reading Festival; Reading Football Club as well local wildlife and features. Each hole has wheelchair access and was designed so that the hole entrance was accessible and kerbing was lowered for exit.

Our work

The area was not without a few challenges. Before we could start work we had to address the site's drainage issues as well as work around existing service access points. For this project we used edger-style blocks and timber for the borders and coloured exterior-grade sports carpet for the playing surface. We then installed the features which our workshop had prepared. To finish the site, a flexi-pave compound was used for pathways.

The results

The course is open 7 days a week and has proven extremely popular with families and players of all abilities. It is accessible for wheelchair users and DDA friendly putters and suction caps are available. Since opening it has become a real attraction in the area creating a real buzz and bringing more people to Prospect Park.

And finally…

Each hole has a QR code on the tee marker which links to the council website. By scanning the code, players can learn more about the landmarks represented in the features on the course, making a visit to the course not only great fun, but a fantastic opportunity to learn something new - perfect for school trips!
