ADVENTURE GOLF: Play2Day, Railway Golf, Wisbech

GET ON BOARD FOR THIS EPIC RAILWAY ADVENTURE GOLF JOURNEY

THE BRIEF

In a disused field of weeds, our client had a vision of installing 18-holes of adventure golf outdoors to compliment their indoor bowling lanes, laser quest and soft play centre. Located on a site aptly named The Old Station Yard in Guyhirn, what better theme could there be for a course than a railway?

Plans

Our design crew got to work on creating some exciting and challenging designs that would maximise the visitor experience at the venue, alongside all the other existing activities on offer . The course had to appeal to kids and families, to adults and businesses as well as being DDA compliant - making the course accessible to all including wheel users and buggies - and suitable challenges had to be created to appeal to all. Tunnels, a station, a Pullman style carriage and even an interactive signal box and steam locomotive were incorporated to bring this theme to life.

Our work

Battling typical the British weather – torrential rain on some days to baking hot sun on other days, the course was buit throughout spring. The borders were made using UrbanCrazy’s exclusive bull-nosed kerb blocks combined with timbers and sleepers and the playing surface installed was UrbanCrazy’s exclusive SmoothPutt felt guaranteeing both durability and enhancing playability. All-weather Flexi-pave pathways interconnects each hole and as well as the tees being open-ended, there were also designed with lowered egress points to enhance accessibility. Tees had different colours felt to help make it clear to players where to start from and each hole included a tee marker giving eductaional information and witty comments to give players something to think about as they played each hole. QR codes on the tee markers linked each holes to the client’s website where further fun facts could be found.

The results

The course has received great feedback for its attractive aesthetics and playing challenges, with people returning frequently to enjoy the fun over and over. With plenty of selfie-stations and interactivity, this course proved a big hit from the start and is ‘on track’ to establish itself as an iconic adventure golf course!

And finally…

Spinners at the start of each hole add further random challenges to ‘derail’ play. Instructions include playing with the wrong hand, turning the putter upside down or even kneeling whilst playing which add to the fun and ensure people choo-choose to come make a return journey!
